We specialize in women's literature, with a wide selection of fiction, nonfiction, periodicals, music, posters, and t-shirts for and by women. We recently added additional general fiction by men and women authors, political and environmental books, biographies, history, nature and gardening books. We maintain a non-sexist children's section and stock current titles in lesbian and gay studies, bisexual and transgender issues, gender studies, as well as lesbian and gay male fiction. We carry rainbow stickers and flags, bumper stickers, cards and artwork. We provide access to information about housing, employment, counseling, workshops, and events of interest to women and the LGBT community.

Philosophy

Locally owned independent businesses are vital to ensuring the support of all forms of diversity in Madison. A Room of One's Own is a locally owned independent bookstore that works to ensure this diversity by making available a unique variety of choices in literature. This continued support of diversity is what will keep Madison an interesting place to live. It is a legitimate fear that one day there might be only one large bookstore in a city, selling only the top 10 best-selling books. Having independent bookstores assures independent voices and perspectives, and supporting the Buy Local Initiative is one way we do our part for the community.

History

A Room of One's Own Feminist Bookstore has been a fixture in downtown Madison since 1975. Located for the bulk of those years at 317 W. Johnson, we moved two doors closer to State Street in August, 1997. With the move, we doubled our space, allowing us to add a fabulous new coffeehouse. In the more than 30 years of our existence we have hosted hundreds of authors and poets. We like to think that Room of One's Own has played a key part in Madison's literary history.
