The Bartell Theatre Foundation is a unique performing arts support organization. The six resident companies of the Bartell Theatre cooperatively own and operate the theatre, which features the Evjue Stage (a black-box style theatre) and the Drury Stage (a traditional proscenium theatre). The Bartell Theatre is available for rental; check our website for open dates. From young adult to LGBTQA, from classics to edgy modern works, the companies of the Bartell make it the heart of community theatre in Madison.

Philosophy

The Bartell Theatre Foundation was founded with the idea that local support of performing arts was necessary to keep the work relevant to a local audience. 1500 volunteers from all over Dane County created this space, and we continue to value the connections made through us and by us with local businesses and individuals.

History

The first performance of community theatre in the newly renovated Bartell Theatre space was August of 1998, but the building has historic significance beginning in 1906 and continuing through the popular Esquire movie theatre. Since then, 4000 people/year have participated as audience or artists to create productions that move, inspire, and educate.
