Overture Center positively enhances the cultural, educational and community opportunities available to the citizens of our area by proving a wide array of activities and is an essential partner in the Greater Madison area’s economic development efforts. |

HistoryThe Capitol Theatre opened its doors on State Street in 1928. Over the years, as television and multiplexes proliferated, the theater experienced a long decline. However, in 1974, Mayor Paul Soglin wanted a new performing arts center in Madison and The Capitol Theatre became part of this renovation. The theatre was renamed the Oscar Mayer Theatre and opened in 1980 for the next 23 seasons. In 1998, local businessman W. Jerome Frautschi made a breathtaking, multimillion-dollar commitment for the development of a cultural arts district in downtown Madison and The Overture Foundation was established. From this astounding generosity, a state-of-the-art civic cultural center has emerged while preserving the classic elegance of Madison’s historic Capitol Theater, now returned to its original name. |
