A Stone's Throw combines quality women's sportswear clothing with superior customer service in a quaint boutique atmosphere. Located in Madison's premier shopping district on Monroe Street, A Stone's Throw offers active lifestyle clothing options that always hinge on fashion, but must also be functional, enduring and versatile.

Planning on a hike to the Rocky Mountains? Want to feel good and look good in your downward dog? Do you believe in the power of superb-fitting walking shorts that get you from the farmers' market to your kid's lacrosse game with finesse? If you live the active lifestyle, then A Stone's Throw is for you.

At A Stone's Throw, we do know the power of those perfect walking shorts, and we also know a colorful, organic cotton yoga top with moisture-wicking capabilities can seriously make you several degrees cooler (both physically and psyche-wise) in even the hottest Bikram class. Whether "active" means you run 26.2 bi-monthly or walk your dog around the block daily, our store presents an ever-changing rotation of styles from beanie to boot.

Also, the Upstairs Closet (literally upstairs from A Stone's Throw!) features gently used, recycled-from-the-closet items and sale merchandise offering both eco-friendly choices and awesome deals for the savvy shopper.

Philosophy

Madison loves buying local and at A Stone's Throw, we love Madison! We find that new and continuing clientele are fiercely loyal and local. We've built our business on repeat customers who are proud to shop locally in the community, and A Stone's Throw returns the favor by supporting area programs such as Girls on the Run and Access Community Health Center, to name a few. In addition, we showcase a selection of accessories designed by Madison artists.

Foremost, however, is the retail service we provide as a merchant of Monroe Street. We treat people the way we want to be treated. The distinct flair and quality products of A Stone's Throw - and our Upstairs Closet — keep shoppers coming back for more, which means local businesses can thrive amidst the sea of ubiquitous, big-box stores.

History

Our retail journey began quite some time ago in the little tourist town of Minocqua. A Stone's Throw was the brainchild of Heather Higgins, who worked for her dad, Ted, while growing up. For over 20 years, Ted and his family operated a successful sportswear store, and customers from the Madison area repeatedly would comment, "We need something like this in Madison!"

Heather got to thinking... and with the help of her dad and Uncle Jess (and practically all her family members!), A Stone's Throw was born. The doors opened in 2004 to the delight of a steady stream of local (and beyond) active women-whether walkers, runners, fitness gurus, busy moms, or simply clientele with a quest for comfortable, quality clothes.

As a mother herself, Heather seeks out enduring, yet fashionable clothes that stand up to the task. She wants quality, sturdy fabrics and great style. The customers of A Stone's Throw and the Upstairs Closet seek out the same.

Walk up to A Stone's Throw on Monroe Street, and immediately you'll see why this isn't your average boutique. Notice something different right away? It’s probably our lack of chrome. Instead of the usual gleaming metal fixtures, ours are handcrafted from garden trellises, offering a relaxed, earthy feel. Want to just rest for a bit? No worries. Sit down on our couch for a bit and read a magazine. No doubt the mix of active wear and fun accessories will inspire you. And our sales associates are a lively bunch with expert product knowledge.

Don't forget the kids... our play area keeps them busy while Mom gets a break to browse.

Our history continues to grow as we grow. Thanks for stopping by and shopping at A Stone's Throw and the Upstairs Closet!
