ProductsMadison’s Children’s Museum is a must-do experience for all families! It enriches the lives of kids by learning through play. Activities are designed for children through age 12 and their caregivers, and range from science, art and nature programs to physical, imaginative play. The museum closed its State Street location in January 2010 and will reopen at 100 N. Hamilton Street on August 14, 2010. The museum is offering a Road Show, sponsored by Target, which will visit local community centers, special events and other locations through the end of June. Visit our Web site, MadisonChildrensMuseum.org, for details. |

PhilosophyThink Globally, Act Locally. This familiar bumper sticker summarizes what Madison Children’s Museum is all about. Through local people, products and culture, the new building is a compelling example of the museum’s local focus. The museum is proud of its Wisconsin architect (The Kubala Washatko Architects of Cedarburg), contractor (J.H. Findorff & Son of Madison) and local subcontractors. All the exhibits in the new building are being designed and built by the museum’s own staff, with local artists and craftspeople. Area schoolchildren have made handmade ceramic tiles for the restroom walls and decorated bottle caps for a mosaic piece in the Art Studio. Wherever possible, the museum is using recycled and reclaimed local materials; its eco-friendly building practices will hopefully culminate in it becoming the first LEED-certified museum in Wisconsin. The new museum will have a free community concourse; an early learning gallery with plenty of comfortable seating for parents; an art studio, with a mix of drop-in programs; Possible-opolis, an area built with nearly all reused materials so that invention and creativity mesh; a Rooftop Terrace, which will serve as a four-season "park in the sky"; a Bean Sprouts café; and an authentic 1830s log cabin, reclaimed from Walworth County, that sits on the back corner of our property. |

HistoryMadison Children’s Museum was founded in 1980 as a vision of a group of early childhood specialists. The founding board of directors and volunteers built traveling exhibits that were displayed at neighborhood centers, parks and playgrounds. They also operated a pilot museum in the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters. The success of the pilot program prompted the museum to relocate to a warehouse at Bedford Street and West Washington Avenue. The new location was a success, and the museum was often filled to capacity. After a successful capital campaign, Madison Children’s Museum opened its doors at 100 State Street in 1991.In 2007, the museum was rated as one of the “Top 20 Children’s Museums in America” by Grand magazine. In 2002, it was rated one of the top 10 children’s museums in the U.S. by Child magazine. The museum flourished at its State Street location until the time came to find a larger, permanent home. Thanks to an extremely generous gift from the Overture Foundation and the Ready, Set…Grow! Capital Campaign, doors will open on a new museum that will be three times the size of the State Street location, plus room for future expansion. This exciting new museum location will be opening August 14, 2010. |
