Philosophy

Sarah B. Fine Stationery is an independently/locally owned and managed business. In an age of chain/discount stores and internet giants that dominate the stationery and invitation business, they believe that only when working in-person can one best select writing paper and invitations that fulfill our desire for color and texture that set the stage for an event, and that say who we are.

In the stationery business, buying local usually translates into buying items created in the US, and that's what Jan and Renee focus their efforts on. Many of their companies make their own paper, do their own design and printing, use recycled, reclaimed cotton or bamboo papers and use soy inks to turn out incredible creations! They like to support local artists as well, and carry several local peoples' work.

They support and do business with other local companies whenever possible. In addition to Dane Buy Local, they are a proud member/participant of the350project.

History

Sarah B. Fine Stationery has been a fixture on Madison's west side since 1980 and is about to enter its 30th year in business! Jan took over the boutique in 2003, and in 2004, Renee joined her to become her full time manager. Originally in a small strip mall on University Avenue, in 2006 they moved across the street into Hilldale Mall, allowing for greater expansion in the lines and items they carry. They continually look for new and innovative designers and companies, all the while keeping the traditional 'standards' that are still well-loved. Named after the original owner, Sarah B., now passed away, occasionally her family will stop in and comment on how much she would love the store and how happy she would be that it's now in Hilldale Mall.
