I started unearthed about five years ago. I'd just ended a ten year stint as marketing advisor at the Memorial Union and was restless and ready to explore the creative side of life. It was a workshop at the UW Business School on Starting Your Own Business that gave me the impetus to move forward... to define and develop this strange passion I have to shed new light on found objects and elevate their status within the home. In 2003, to great response, I leased space in two local antique shops and filled them with architectural, vintage and industrial finds. The next few years provided growth experiences: permanent display space at Hue Gallery on Monroe Street, a private warehouse showroom on Madison's east side, and an annual foray into the Chicago market where I participate in the exclusive Botanic Garden Antique and Garden Fair in April. About a year ago, I opened my own shop at 2501 University Avenue (across from Lombardino's Restaurant). Word of mouth has been kind to me and the business continues to blossom just beneath the radar. Do come visit: new-finds, ever-changing displays, and great stories are continually being unearthed.

Philosophy

When you buy local, you give life to the consumer experience. No longer is it just about getting the goods - the box of chocolates or flowers or haircut or a lunch. It's also about investing in what surrounds you: the character of a street, the strength of our neighborhoods, and a city that we all want to see survive and flourish. Buying local links you more closely to the people behind the product. That tends to raise the bar to deliver on quality. It also brings  a unique opportunity to share  knowledge, conversation and stories. That's enough for me right there, because I love a good story.

History

unearthed offers architectural, vintage and industrial finds for the home. These elements hail from the farms, factories and schools of yesteryear. When placed within the context of house and garden, they are newly-appreciated as urban antiques; statement pieces that add character and impact to both traditional and contemporary design settings.

Here's a sampling of what you might see at  our shop: Wooden foundry patterns as wall art. Vintage wallpaper print rollers as lamps and pedestal tables. Brass fire cabinets as kitchen storage. X-ray lights as console tables. Steel carts from an old shoe factory as shelving. Vintage gas station signs as big house numbers.  Colorful benches from a convent as hallway perch. Antique carriage blankets as upholstery on large ottomans. Mohair-covered theater chairs from the '30s as media room seating. Vintage wool swimsuits framed in lucite. Still life of a dozen wind-up alarm clocks from the depression era. Antique surveyor transits as towel rods...

As we search for these one-of-a-kind finds we consider color, texture, sculpture and curiosity - that's the story. Because each object has a story to tell, which conveys an honesty that you just don't get from the mass-produced. Perfectly worn. Achingly loved. Hardworking icons of our past that speak with a loud whisper.
