Isthmus melds coverage of arts, politics, media, economics, government- all the stuff of life-in a way meant to yield a truer perception of their community for the residents of greater Madison, Wisconsin. It is charged as an institution to inform rather than persuade, to influence through observation; to sustain itself and grow in the commercial marketplace; to participate in the free exchange of ideas and information; to justly compensate the contribution of employees; rightly reward the stewardship, effort and investment of ownership; to return the confidence and support of the community by serving as an agent of reflection and progress.

Isthmus goes about its business with a stake in making our community work. Isthmus' 37 employees join in, contribute ideas and support Madison's superior quality of life through civic organizations and charitable events, such as The Isthmus Jazz Festival, Isthmus Green Day, Isthmus Beer and Cheese Fest and other events that celebrate the culture and life of Madison. Isthmus also sponsors numerous community activities through promotional ads in its papers. Each year, Isthmus holds a democratic poll asking residents of Dane County to vote for their favorites businesses, people, and places in Madison and presents winners with coveted “Madison Favorites” awards. Acknowledging local businesses for their dedication to the community is of utmost importance to Isthmus, as the paper’s purpose is to pay homage to the community, its people, and the events that take place within it.

Isthmus has been the alternative newspaper of Madison, WI. since 1976. Its quality has been recognized by numerous sources, including over 40 awards by the Milwaukee Press Club's statewide Excellence in Journalism contest. The success of Isthmus has been built on a foundation of fearless reporting, forthright opinion and innovative perspective. Founded by journalists as an alternative to a monopoly daily newspaper situation, Isthmus now reaches 36 percent of all adults in Dane County, a total of 167,000. Today, Isthmus is also represented by The Daily Page at thedailypage.com, mobile site m.isthmus.com, and recent offshoot IsthmusParents.com, a family-oriented site.
