Since 1917, Wisconsin Public Radio has been offering listeners a stimulating means by which to exchange ideas, and an efficient way to get caught up on the news of the day. A civic and cultural resource which exists to enlighten and enrich the quality of life for the people within its listening area. WPR reflects the values and resources of the University and the State of Wisconsin, and embraces the “Wisconsin Idea”, helping to extend the borders of the University to the State and beyond, and providing significant programming by, for and about the people of Wisconsin.

Philosophy

Wisconsin Public Radio is committed to supporting local and Wisconsin-based businesses in our purchasing, promotion and community partnerships.  As a unit of the University of Wisconsin – Extension, much of our procurement is routed through the state.  However, we also work through our statewide network of stations and staff (Madison, Milwaukee, Green Bay, Wausau, Superior, Eau Claire and LaCrosse) to purchase and partner with local non-profits and businesses.  Our program sponsorships allow local groups an affordable and effective way to reach audiences that care about local. As the second-largest public radio network in the nation, we are proud to connect Wisconsin's communities with local, statewide, national and international news, information, education and entertainment.

History

Wisconsin Public Radio is one of the oldest radio stations – and the second largest public radio network – in the nation.  University of Wisconsin professors Earle Terry and Edward Bennett were American radio pioneers that helped establish the state as a leader in broadcasting innovation.  In 1914, they launched 9XM, the station we call WHA today.  Our Ideas Network and News & Classical Music programs reach every corner of the state, connecting families and individuals in a daily conversation about Wisconsin’s past, present and future.  Visit wpr.org to find a local station, listen online and learn more.
