Products

We offer hands-on workshops in self-reliance skills, including organic gardening skills (e.g. composting, seed-starting, trellis-making, transplanting) and food preservation and cooking skills (e.g. canning, pickling, drying, freezing). We also sell aprons, note cards, canvas bags, and a limited selection of pickles and jams from our garden. We give most of the produce from our 4000 sq. ft. organic garden to food pantries. We welcome field trips for children to learn where their food comes from. We also show films concerning the need for a local, organic food system, and give lectures on food preservation in corporate or other institutional settings. We depend on volunteer labor in the garden and in committees.

Philosophy

We need to create a low-energy society, and local economies are vital to that effort. We can stabilize our climate, create jobs that can't "run away," and increase the cohesion and happiness of our communities by buying local. Fitchburg Fields always tries to buy everything locally: printing, food processing, tools for the garden, etc.

History

Fitchburg Fields was formed in January 2008 by Phyllis Hasbrouck and Terry Carpenter. Our mission is to teach self-reliance skills relating to food, and to educate the community about the necessity of a local, organic food system. We have a vision for a large center for sustainable farming and living,(see it at www.fitchburgfields.org) but presently we are in the beginning phase, on 4000 sq. ft. of borrowed land.
