PhilosophyWilly Street Co-op's primary mission is "to operate a retail grocery store that forms a cornerstone of a vibrant community." To evaluate how well the Co-op was progressing toward this objective, the Board of Directors developed an Ends Global Policy - five major goals to strive for. The third goal directs the Co-op to encourage local farmers, manufacturers and distributors to work in partnership with us; and to encourage other businesses and co-ops link with us to improve services. The Co-op offers as many locally produced products as possible and prefers to use the services of local businesses. |

HistoryThe Willy Street Co-op opened for business in 1974 in the building currently used by Mother Fool's Coffeehouse. It was established by near eastside Madison residents who felt that area grocery stores did not fulfill their needs for locally grown produce and bulk products. Today the Co-op has approximately 13,000 members, about 11,000 of whom are equity-paying members and therefore owners of the store. Each owner gets a vote on major Co-op issues and for the Board of Directors candidates. The Co-op exists for the benefit of these owners. |
