PhilosophyCommunity Car launched in 2003 in Madison, WI, with the help of eight local investors, all of whom live within just a few miles of the capitol. While carsharing continues to flourish all over the country and the world, we’ve tried to keep our perspective local and cater to our friends’ and neighbors’ needs. Because we know how important it is to our community, we provide hybrid-electric cars whenever possible. We provide a wide range of family and pet-friendly vehicles because we know how important it is to our community to have the freedom to bring their whole family along for the ride. Each year we invite our friends and neighbors to our Earth Day and World Car Free Day celebrations, as well as several other fun events. As we continue to grow, we look to our community for support and ideas on how we can best serve Madison. |

HistorySonya Newenhouse, President and founder of Community Car, first encountered carsharing in Portland, Oregon in 2003. Being inspired by this new concept of reducing CO2 emissions, cutting down on traffic congestion, pollution and all the other negatives that come along with vehicular transportation, her environmental consulting firm, Madison Environmental Group, conducted a feasibility study in 2003 to see whether or not carsharing would work in Madison, WI. The research concluded that carsharing in Madison was a go, and Community Car was born. Community Car launched as Wisconsin’s first carsharing organization in October of 2003 with the help of eight local investors. The company started with three vehicles and twenty charter members and has since grown to eighteen vehicles and 1200 members, and continues to grow every day. |
