HistoryArea residents had been gardening on the previously State-owned site for years. Neighbors used the open land to bird-watch, walk their dogs, and simply wander. When the State announced plans to sell the land, concerned community members, facilitated by the Northside Planning Council, began meeting and planning. Several non-profit groups - the MACLT, Urban Open Space Foundation, Community Action Coalition, and UW-Madison joined together to form the Troy Gardens Coalition, which created a plan to save the land from undesirable development. The MACLT has sold 30 townhomes, and the Friends of Troy Gardens has developed educational programs, established the CSA farm and stewarded the land. |
