Community Shares of Wisconsin (CSW) -- together with its donors and its 64 member nonprofits -- addresses social, economic, and environmental problems through grassroots action, advocacy, research, and public education. CSW supports our member groups: by raising money through workplace giving and from individual donors, and by providing training, technical support, and networking.

Philosophy

Community Shares values buying and giving locally. Giving locally makes sense because you know where and how your charitable dollars are being spent. Local charities and non-profit organizations understand and embrace the interests and values of our community. In the end, giving closer to home improves our community's quality of life and helps to build a stronger community.

History

Community Shares of Wisconsin is the nation's oldest social action fund, having been established in Madison in 1971. We were created to establish an efficient, equitable system for raising and distributing funds for causes not funded by mainstream sources. Our groups address social, economic, and environmental problems through grassroots activities, advocacy, research, and public education.
