Sustain Dane is a non-profit organization committed to helping make Dane County more sustainable. Our focus is on what works, finding and supporting solutions while acknowledging the problems. We operate from a partnership model, and seek to find ways to organize our lives as individuals and in our community as a whole that increases quality of life, promotes community, is more harmlessly integrated into local and global ecosystems, and is attractive, life affirming, and enjoyable.

Philosophy

Buying local is critical for the community to be sustainable. Not only does buying from locally owned and operated businesses help our community meet its own needs but it helps the community to minimize our dependence upon fossil fuels, lessens the build-up of toxic metals, minerals and synthetic chemicals, and helps reduce our encroachment upon nature.

History

Since our inception, the organization has taken a collaborative approach on a variety projects and programs ranging from offering Northwest Earth Institute discussion courses on sustainability topics to assisting in the development of an international sustainable community network. Through a variety of speaker events, we also seek to explore different aspects of sustainability, both as they apply to our own lives and to the community as a whole. We have organized events on a wide range of topics and featured speakers such as Torbjorn Lahti, David Orr, Milenko Matanovic, Nina Leopold Bradley and Dick Roy.
