Products and Services:
The Clean Lakes Alliance (CLA) is a not-for-profit organization devoted to improving the water quality of the lakes, streams, and wetlands of the Yahara River watershed. We are a unique partnership of diverse stakeholders who are building onand expanding upondecades of ongoing efforts to preserve and restore our waterways. Our vision: We see a future in which everyone realizes that our lakes are the center of our community. In order to realize this vision, we seek to raise community awareness of the issues facing the watershed, advocate for the welfare of the lakes, and help procure the necessary funding to clean and protect these waterways. Working closely with state, county, and local government agencies, as well as waterway user groups, shoreline property owners, and community nonprofits, CLA serves as both a positive voice for the promotion of our lakes and a fundraising vehicle for achieving these ends.
Philosophy:
The focal point for all of our efforts are the Yahara lakes, all of which are located right here in Dane County; these water bodies are the most prominent and cherished features of our local natural environment. CLA makes sure to give preferential treatment to local vendors and other partnering organizations, such as the The Paper Mill Store.com, a locally owned paper supply company headquartered in Sun Prairie. We partner with numerous local restaurants during World Water Week, an annual event in which we use tap water as a talking point to bring awareness to the critical importance of clean water. We are also strongly committed to developing relationships with locally owned companies with a worldwide reach, such as Lands End and Spectrum Brands, the parent company of Rayovac and Black and Decker.
History:
The Clean Lakes Alliance was founded in 2009 to administer the business end of the annual Clean Lakes Festival. The Festival, which began in 2007, was organized by the Mad-City Water Ski Team in an effort to raise money to help clean up the lakes. In 2010, under the leadership of Don Heilman and James Tye, the Clean Lakes Alliance changed from a volunteer entity to a staffed organization. Today, CLA is working to build community support and the financial resources necessary to reach our goal of reducing phosphorus input into the Yahara lakes by 50% by 2025, which will dramatically reduce algae blooms and improve water quality. CLA and its partners are working with Yahara Pride Farmsa group of like-minded progressive Dane County farmersto reduce their production of nutrient-rich runoff by implementing best management practices such as cover cropping and the planting of buffer strips. Were active throughout the year organizing family-friendly activities to encourage residents to get invested in their lakes, and we are supporting research and monitoring that will give us the knowledge we need to make the best investments possible to improve our waterways.
