Products and Services:
The Westside Community Market is Madison's second largest producer-only farmers' market. Open April - November on Saturdays from 7 am - 1 pm in the Hill Farms Department of Transportation parking lot located at the intersection of Sheboygan Avenue and Segoe Road. Fresh, locally grown, raised or produced: vegetables, fruits, berries, meats, cheeses, baked goods, bedding and blooming locally acclimatized plants, cut flowers, native perennials, dairy, eggs, mushrooms, pickles, preserves, honey, and more. Free coffee, and immediately adjacent free parking.
Philosophy:
Like the Dane County Farmers' market, the Westside Community Market is vendor-run and producer-only, with all products produced in Wisconsin. We are particularly focused on accessibility, with a flat, easily traversed market space immediately adjacent to customer parking, configured to enhance a personal connection between the farmer, the baker and the consumer without the pressure of crowds trying to navigate a confined space. Leftover produce goes to local food pantries. More information can be found on our website: www.westsidecommunitymarket.org
History:
The Westside Community Market has been operating since 2005, as vendors from the former Hilldale farmers' market sought a better site once the mall's owners redeveloped its parking lots into condos and parking structures. Now vendor-run in a large public space, the Westside Community Market turns an otherwise unused employee parking lot into a community-based economic and social center on Saturday mornings. As at the Capitol Square, nonprofits and political groups, with a permit from the Capital police, are allowed to have information tables.
