Products and Services:
Founded in 1870, the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters is an independent, nonprofit organization, separate from state government and the university. Our mission is to connect people and ideas from all areas of knowledge and all walks of life to celebrate thought, culture and nature in our state and help solve our common problems. We do this in a unique and multi-disciplinary way, through our four core programs: the James Watrous Gallery at the Overture Center for the Arts, a gallery by and for Wisconsin artists; Wisconsin People & Ideas, our quarterly magazine about Wisconsin thought and culture; Academy Evenings, our statewide series of public discussion forums on issues that matter to Wisconsinites; and the Wisconsin Idea at the Wisconsin Academy, a public policy program which most recently focused on ¿The Future of Farming and Rural Life in Wisconsin.¿ The Wisconsin Academy also sponsors the Wisconsin Poet Laureate Commission, the State Natural Areas Preservation Council, the Hessen-Wisconsin Writers Exchange Program, and many other endeavors that contribute to the betterment of Wisconsin thought and culture.
Philosophy:
Wisconsin Academy¿s mission is to help preserve Wisconsin¿s human, cultural and natural resources. It is in this spirit, that we pledge our support of local organizations and independently-owned businesses that work to make Southern Wisconsin a more socially equitable, environmentally sustainable, and humanities-rich part of our state.
